Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are in a statistical tie as new polling shows voters moving in an unexpected direction in the home stretch of the race to the White House.
The US presidential election is in a statistical tie with new polling showing Donald Trump trending nationally and Kamala Harris making up ground in the key swing states.
It comes as the two candidates begin delivering their closing messages on the campaign trail, shifting from the economy, immigration and abortion to focus on the personality and professionalism Americans want in the White House.
As Democrats and Republicans hustle to claim undecided voters, the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has offered $1 million ($A1.5m) a day, until the election, for voters in swing states to sign a petition supporting the Constitution.
It has led to calls for an investigation into his Trump America PAC for potential election interference in the key battleground states, where a Washington Post-Schar School poll found Ms Harris gaining ground.
Ms Harris led among likely voters in Georgia (51 per cent to 47), Michigan (49 per cent to 47), Pennsylvania (49 per cent to 47) and Wisconsin (50 per cent to 47).
They are tied at 48 per cent in Nevada, while Mr Trump is ahead in North Carolina (50 per cent to 47) and in Arizona (49 per cent to 46).
A new national poll by USA Today/Suffolk University found Trump significantly gaining in popularity, with Ms Harris at 45 per cent to Mr Trump’s 44 per cent. The same poll in August had Ms Harris leading by five points, 48 per cent to 43 per cent, showing a surge in nation-wide support for Mr Trump.
The latest polls have moved the Real Clear Politics polling average to Ms Harris up by 1 per cent nationally, and Mr Trump up in the battleground states by 1 per cent.
While a statistical tie in the aggregate of polls, election predictor Nate Silver updated his model showing Mr Trump has a 53.1 per cent chance to win the election compared to Ms Harris at 46.6 per cent
To turn it around, Ms Harris hit the campaign trail attempting to sound alarm bells over the danger of an “unhinged” Mr Trump returning to office. In her closing gambit to lock in suburban women, she’s campaigning with Republican Liz Cheney, daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
After a weekend of attempting to show he’s a regular Joe by tossing fries at McDonalds and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mr Trump is campaigning in Hurricane devastated North Carolina.
