Prince Philip’s life in pictures: An officer and a gentleman

He was the pauper prince, turned dashing sailor, who became the longest-serving consort in British history. Prince Philip left his own indelible mark on the monarchy, with his resolute support of the Queen, no-nonsense approach, hard work and acerbic wit.

Prince Philip, who braved the bad weather for hours with the Queen, was taken to hospital the next day and diagnosed with a bladder infection. Recalling the health scare, which saw him admitted to hospital for nearly a week, Ingrid Seward, of <i>Majesty</i>, wrote: “When he was taken to hospital from Windsor Castle, the Queen looked at him and said, ‘Don’t you die on me’.
