Police are searching door-to-door for the person who shot and killed conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

FBI earlier announced the shooter was still on the loose after a person who was detained and questioned was released.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the second person of interest arrested earlier has also been released.

“The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement,” he said.

“Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”

Mr Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two and a key ally of US President Donald Trump, was fatally shot in the neck while holding a Q&A session from a pop-up tent during his American Comeback tour.

The activist was fired upon by a shooter from a nearby building while answering a question about mass shootings committed by trans people, according to witnesses.

The conservative influencer jerked back and appeared to grab at his neck as the shot rang out, a video from the scene shows.

Mr Kirk was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, but could not be saved.

Both Mr Trump and Vice President JD Vance, a personal friend of Mr Kirk, have expressed their condolences in the wake of the assassination.

Footage has also emerged of the possible shooter, with a video revealing a person running of a rooftop at the venue.
