The driver of an “unknown vehicle” lost consciousness and drove into a crowd standing outside a nightclub in East Hollywood, injuring 31 people.
Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Adam VanGerpen said seven people were a critical condition, a further six in a serious state, and 19 people were being treated for minor injuries.
He said the majority of victims treated for injuries were women who were waiting in line to enter the club.
He said it was a “very chaotic scene”, where “a lot of bystanders came out to help people”.
The incident occurred at an intersection on Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, and footage from the scene showed multiple people lying on the road around a grey car that mounted the pavement outside a venue called The Vermont.
Wounded pedestrians were treated at the scene when the crash occurred at 2am local time.
At least 120 firefighters from the LA fire department were called to the horrific accident.
The LAFD confirmed: “LAFD is coordinating patient triage and transport at this time.”
LAFD Captain Adam VanGerpen said, according to AXN News: “There was a vehicle that had somebody lose consciousness inside the vehicle.
“Drove into a taco cart and ultimately ran into a large number of people who were outside of the club.”
There are also unconfirmed reports there was a gunshot fired which wounded one of the victims.
Police received a 911 call about reports of shots fired during a fight allegedly involving 15 people around the time of the crash, but no arrests have been made so far.
“It is still unconfirmed, but we have reports that there was a gunshot wound in one of the patients,” Captain VanGerpen said.
“There was a patient inside the vehicle. They were able to extricate that patient. That’s still ongoing with the investigation.”
He said the majority of the 31 patients were being treated and transported to local hospitals.
The nightclub was hosting a concert billed as ‘So-Cal’s Biggest Reggaeton & Hip-Hop Party’.
The Vermont Hollywood describes itself online as “LA’s new state of the art, live performance and special event venue.”
Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Travis Ward said it is too early to determine if the car deliberately drove into the crowd.
