The man wanted for stabbing NASCAR star Bobby East to death in California earlier this week has been gunned down by a SWAT team in Anaheim, California police revealed.
East, 37, who won three USAC national driving titles, was stabbed while getting petrol at a service station on Wednesday.
Local police previously identified the suspect in East’s killing as Trent William Millsap, 27, who they described as a “transient and known to frequent Westminster, Garden Groce and Anaheim motels.”
According to the New York Post Millsap was killed on Friday when a SWAT team was serving a search warrant and shots rang out, police said.
“No officers were injured; however, a police K-9 sustained a single gunshot wound that was not life threatening.”
Photos of Millsap showed him covered with tattoos on his head, face, neck, chest, arms and hands. Police had said he was considered “armed and dangerous.”
Millsap, who was reported earlier Saturday to still be on the run, died of his gunshot wounds at a local trauma centre.
Millsap was on parole when he stabbed East to death in the chest.
A statement from Westminster Police Department said: “The victim was found on the ground suffering from a serious stab wound to the chest area.
“Officers attempted life saving measures until OCFA paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local trauma centre, where the victim succumbed to his injury.”
Detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
The Westminster Police Department said: “Trent William Millsap, who fled the area prior to police arrival, is suspected of stabbing the victim.”
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that police tracked down Millsap to an Annaheim apartment on Friday, two days after East was fatally stabbed.
They carried out a search warrant, and Millsap was shot while he was being arrested.
The Orange County District lawyer is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
The US Auto Club shared a statement about East’s tragic death.
“Bobby East, one of the most prolific drivers of his era and a three-time USAC National Champion driver in USAC Silver Crown and Midgets, passed away on the night of July 13, 2022, in southern California.”
“Born in Torrance, California but making his home throughout his racing career in Brownsburg, Indiana, East captured 56 career USAC-sanctioned feature victories, 48 of them in national divisions.”
East, who lived in Brownsburg, Indiana, was part of Ford’s driver development program while he raced in ARCA, and NASCAR.
