Ghislaine Maxwell believes that her former lover, the disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, was murdered, her brother has claimed.

Speaking on the Spectator’s Americano podcast, Ian Maxwell said his sister is the only one in his family that believes financier Epstein, who was found hanged in his Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial for child sex charges, did not take his own life.

Due to his high-profile connections to Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton, many conspiracy theorists believe that Epstein did not kill himself.

Ghislaine is the youngest child of media tycoon Robert Maxwell, who died in unusual circumstances in 1991 having gone missing after being on his yacht.

His body was later found floating in the Atlantic Ocean and the official cause of death was put down as accidental drowning following a heart attack.

British businessman Ian Maxwell told the podcast he believed his sister thought Epstein had been killed.

“I don’t buy a lot of the conspiracy theories at all. It so happens one of the conspiracy theories about my father is that he was murdered rather than committed suicide or died by accident,” Ian Maxwell said. “And I would venture to believe that she may also think that Epstein was murdered … I do happen to think my sister does think that he was killed,” he said.

Maxwell, who regularly communicates with his sister through lawyers, said the case against her is “really a case against Jeffrey Epstein that’s been reverse engineered post his death against my sister”.

He said: “It’s been driven from the start by a combination of enormous embarrassment on the part of US legal authorities on the one hand, and by the greed of lawyers for the accused on the other hand that has whipped up tremendous fury against my sister, that has totally trashed her presumption of innocence and led to her being jailed for more 525 days, in isolation, treated as guilty before any trial.”

The prosecution in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking trial rested its case on Friday. Her defence is set to start putting forward its case on Thursday.

Prosecutors initially asked for three weeks to make their arguments in the trial but moved through the case more quickly than expected.

The former socialite has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of sex trafficking and other charges for her alleged role in recruiting and grooming four teenagers for Epstein to abuse between 1994 and 2004.

Four accusers have testified at the sex abuse trial in Manhattan, offering details about allegations Maxwell groomed them to participate in sexual massages with Epstein.

Her lawyers say the government is making her a scapegoat for alleged sex crimes committed by Epstein.
