Blood stains found in Shane Warne’s hotel room were likely the result of the desperate CPR attempts made to revive him, an Australian emergency medicine expert has revealed.

Founder of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Professor Gerry FitzGerald

said Warne’s friends had clearly tried hard to save him.

Vigorous and extended CPR can cause injuries to the ribs and lungs and could result in bleeding, but Prof FitzGerald said it was not a reason to abandon the lifesaving treatment.

“There’s no doubt whatsoever that the effects of CPR is going to buy time,” Prof FitzGerald, who is a former commissioner of the Queensland Ambulance Service, said.

“What CPR can do is buy time for defibrillators to get to the person. The defibrillator is what makes the difference.”

Professor FitzGerald said the tragedy served as a reminder of the importance of knowing how to do CPR, even though in Warne’s case it had not been successful.

“They’d given him the best possible chance (by doing CPR),” he said.

“You’ve got to try something. There can be some damage to the ribs (and lungs) occasionally but that’s not going to make the situation any worse.”

Thai police had earlier revealed blood stains were found on the carpet, towels and a pillow inside Warne’s room at the luxury Samujana Villas resort.

“A large amount of blood was found in the room,” Pol Maj Gen Satit Polpinit, commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, told Thai newspaper Matichon.

“When CPR was started, the deceased had coughed up liquid and was bleeding.”

Warne’s long-term manager James Erskine had earlier revealed friends had performed CPR on the leg spinner for 20 minutes as they waited for ambulance crews to arrive.

They in turn, continued CPR, as they took Warne to hospital, where he was declared dead 45 minutes later.
