Trump reveals plan to retake Bagram air base near China nuclear sites
Donald Trump has declared he wants to reclaim a strategic Afghan air base near China’s nuclear facilities in a meeting with Keir Starmer. It comes after the president’s Marine One helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing.
Donald Trump said he would like to take back a former American air base in Afghanistan in order to be within striking distance of Chinese nuclear facilities.
Mr Trump made the comments at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a state visit to the UK.
Bagram air base in Afghanistan’s north east is located close to the borders of both China and Pakistan.
The Taliban took it over in 2021 in the lead up to American troops leaving the country under former President Joe Biden.
“We want that base back. But one of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” Mr Trump said.
It comes after the helicopter carrying the Trumps was forced to make an emergency landing en route to Starmer’s country residence due to mechanical difficulties.
