A young woman is in a serious condition after she was bitten by a shark while snorkelling at a popular tourist spot.

A woman has been attacked by a shark while snorkelling at a popular tourist spot in Western Australia.

The woman, aged in her 30s, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the attack off Rat Island in the Abrolhos Islands at 5.30pm on Tuesday, ABC reported.

Emergency services attended the scene, and the woman was flown to hospital in Geraldton for treatment.

Rat Island is about 80km off the coast of Geraldton, in WA’s Mid West.

It is not yet known what species of shark bit the woman.

People have been warned to take caution at Rat Island and check the SharkSmart website or app.

Shark sightings can be reported to WA Water Police on (08) 9442 8600.
