Four people have been saved from the water in Venus Bay in a Christmas Day rescue mission with the help of newly installed safety equipment.
Bystanders alerted lifesavers to two swimmers in distress just before 1pm by using the newly installed Public Rescue Equipment (PRE), which was only introduced four days prior.
The PRE, which has been installed at Venus Bay’s five beaches, are fitted with a guide to assist beachgoers in helping someone in distress, a lifesaving rescue tube, an emergency call button to contact triple zero and location marker codes in case of emergency.
Quick-thinking bystanders used the PRE station to call for help, alerting lifesavers at the Venus Bay Surf Lifesaving Club to the danger.
Volunteer lifesavers then rescued four people using boards and tubes in the surf.
The rescued swimmers did not require medical treatment from paramedics.
The PRE equipment was introduced on December 22 on a trial in an effort to improve emergency response times and reduce drownings at high-risk beaches.
