Melbourne motorists are being forced to pay near-record prices at bowsers, and the pain is forecast to get worse.
While the price for unleaded fuel is averaging about $1.90 a litre, some stations across the city have hit prices as high as $2.29 per litre, according to the RACV’s fuel tracking data.
A combination of a reduction in international oil production last month, the end of the fuel excise and issues at oil refineries have all caused prices to soar.
It follows a similar spike last month, where prices skyrocketed as high as $2.09 across Melbourne.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has told Melbourne drivers that while prices are increasing, they can find ways to beat the prices hikes.
“If motorists shop around, they may find some retailers that have not yet increased prices,” said the ACCC.
Residents in Melbourne’s southeast took to Facebook on Thursday offering a “heads-up” for motorists as prices begin to soar.
A number of pumps near Frankston North on Thursday were charging customers well above $2 per litre for Unleaded 91.
Motorists are being encouraged to use fuel comparison apps and websites to find the best prices in their area before prices skyrocket.
