Authorities are investigating the death of a man who fell into a silo at a quarry in Melbourne’s outer east, sparking a grisly recovery mission.

A man has died after falling into a silo at an eastern suburbs quarry, sparking a major WorkSafe investigation.

Victoria Police and CFA members performed the grisly rescue turned recovery mission on Saturday evening after the man - believed to be aged in his 50s - fell into a silo at the Boral Quarry on Canterbury Rd in Montrose about 4.30pm.

The identity of the man was unknown on Saturday evening.

He was understood to be working at the quarry when the tragic incident occured.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said WorkSafe would investigate.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death,” a statement read.
