Police say loaded gun stashed in playroom could have killed someone

Police have charged a suspected former bikie after allegedly uncovering a massive haul of drugs, wads of cash and a dangerous weapon stashed among children’s toys in his Rowville home.

Rowville playroom drug bust

A former bikie has been busted with 3kg of cocaine and a loaded gun hidden in a child’s playroom at Rowville.

Australian Federal Police officers arrested and charged Jonas Wong, 32, after descending on his home on Friday.

Officers seized 1kg of methamphetamine and $100,000 cash in the swoop.

The handgun was allegedly found in an ottoman in the playroom as police carried out a search warrant.

The AFP say Mr Wong, who is a suspected former member of an outlaw motorcycle gang, is also set to face high-level drug charges after the operation, during which police also seized electronic devices.

Mr Wong appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, charged with possessing commercial quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine and possessing an unregistered handgun.

He was also charged with dealing in money believed to be the proceeds of crime.

AFP Det Insp Chris Salmon said the loaded gun inside the playroom could have hurt or killed Mr Wong’s family members.

“This loaded firearm was found by police in a child’s playroom, which is hard to imagine what may have occurred if a young person managed to find it,” he said.

“This arrest should serve as a warning to anyone possessing an illicit firearm.

“This isn’t just a case of alleged criminals possessing firearms to target each other. Innocent bystanders, including family members, are at serious risk of being harmed or killed.”

Insp Salmon said keeping illegal guns and drugs off the streets was a priority for the AFP because of the “dangers they posed to the community in the hands of criminals”.

“The AFP, along with its state law enforcement partners, are committed to removing illicit drugs, cash and firearms from the hands of criminals and doing whatever we can to protect the community,” he said.

The investigation into Mr Wong was ongoing and more charges could be laid, police said.
