The man caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting in Melbourne’s southeast could do nothing but close his eyes and wait for the impact.

Driving in Glen Iris at about 11pm on Wednesday night, Doug was forced to swerve onto the nature strip opposite his Gardiner Pde home of 40 years to avoid a car barrelling down the street.

“There it was, a car bearing down on me and there was no way they could avoid me or I could avoid them,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I had my eyes shut waiting for the impact.”

Narrowly missing Doug and a nearby lampost, the car slowed enough to fire two rounds in his direction before speeding away.

Stunningly, Doug was left unscathed — but his grey sedan was less fortunate, with a bullet piercing all the way through his wheel cap.

In a daze, he said the “bizarre” series of events left him wondering what had happened.

One resident described the area as “lovely” and said she has “fabulous neighbours”, while another told the Herald Sun he was surprised a drive-by shooting would occur on a residential road like his.

However, Doug’s neighbour, Ness, was less surprised, noting an increase in crime recently.

She said there had been a “high volume of aggregated burglaries in the area within the last 18 months”.

“We’ve had to go back to the old school neighbourhood watch where we have to look out for one another.”

Ness said her family heard arguing on the street at around 10.30pm Wednesday evening and her twins, who were studying at the time for some upcoming exams, said they heard gunshots.

She said the experience has been “surreal” for her kids but that they are “doing okay”.

Police at the scene said that they did not think it was a targeted attack.

Their investigation is ongoing with the exact circumstances surrounding the incident yet to be determined

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
