A man has died after being swept off the rocks and out to sea at a beach on the Mornington Peninsula.

Six drownings across country over Easter long weekend

A man has drowned after being washed off the rocks near Cape Schanck.

The man was on a beach off Boneo Rd about 9.45am on Friday morning when he was pulled out to sea.

Emergency services including the Air Wing conducted a search and found the man floating unresponsive in the ocean.

He was brought back to shore but could not be revived.

Locals say the waters of Cape Schanck are notoriously dangerous.

“We have at least one fatality a year,” a worker at the nearby lighthouse told the Herald Sun.

In September 2024, a 53 year old woman drowned in similar circumstances when the tides swept her out to sea near the Cape Schanck boardwalk.

The man’s death comes only a week following a horror Easter long weekend in which seven people drowned across Australia’s east coast.

Among them was a married couple who were swept off the rocks at a beach near Phillip Island, just an hour and a half away from Cape Schanck.
