Junior doctor Ryan Cho’s medical registration suspended allegations he filmed staff in toilets

A junior doctor has had his medical registration suspended after being charged with secretly filming colleagues using a hidden camera in the staff toilets at the Austin Hospital.

Ryan Cho, the junior doctor accused of filming his colleagues with a hidden camera in staff toilets, has had his medical registration suspended, nearly two weeks after being charged.

The 27-year-old’s registration was officially suspended on Monday by the Medical Board of Australia according to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

AHPRA stated they were unable to say much about the incident, with the fact it was public knowledge being the only reason they could comment at all.

“Confidentiality provisions of the National Law under which we operate limit what we can say publicly about an individual practitioner or matter,” a spokesperson said.

“Unless a matter is already in the public domain, we are unable to provide information in relation to it. We can confirm that the public register shows that the registration of Dr Ryan Yi Cho was suspended yesterday.”

Mr Cho was arrested by police on 10 July after staff at the Austin Hospital discovered a mobile phone hidden in a staff bathroom recording them.

He was later charged with stalking and use of an optical surveillance device.

It has also been revealed that other hospitals across the state have been identified as “places of interest” due to Mr Cho being employed there in the past, including Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Mr Cho has been in the state’s hospital system since 2020, when he was still at Monash University. He graduated in 2022.

Mr Cho will next appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on 29 August.
