Funding delays and classroom upgrades: See how your school fares in the 2025-26 state budget

The state budget has revealed key details of signature projects at public schools – and some students will be waiting longer than expected for upgrades. This is how your school fares.

New Victorian government budget will continue to ‘add’ to state’s debt

Victoria’s status as the Education State is in slowdown, with funding for signature projects delayed until after next year’s state election despite big spending promises.

Dozens of upgrades at schools such as Belmont High School, Carrington Primary and Drouin Secondary College will not be completed until 2027 or 2028, with the government spending $148m on portable classrooms instead, the state budget has revealed.

The government has announced two new schools in Officer and Aintree.

In addition, $48m has been allocated to expand capacity at Casey Fields Primary, Cranbourne West Secondary College and Riverwalk Primary School but only $930,000 will be spent this financial year.

Ten million dollars has been allocated for future capital upgrades at schools such as Boroondara Park Primary, Melton Primary and The Grange P-12, but it will be divided between 20 schools.

And $25m has been allocated for minor capital projects at schools such as Araluen Primary, Malvern Primary and Yarra Glen Primary, but only half of this is to be spent this financial year.

While the state’s student body mostly welcomed the budget, VicSRC was disappointed by the delay in full School Resources Standard funding which won’t come into affect until 2031.

“Students have been waiting a long time for schools to be funded at the level we actually need.

While this budget’s investment in curriculum and new schools is welcome, Victorian students don’t want to be left behind,” VicSRC Executive Committee Member Oskar said.

Other aspects of the budget that concerned the VicSRC included decreased funding in teacher capacity building and the fact their calls for classroom safety funding were ignored.
