Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has used a sexually shocking scene from the hit series White Lotus to make a point about the Liberal Party’s opposition to tax cuts in the federal budget.
In the Bangkok bar scene — which left viewers stunned and has spawned scores of viral memes — star actor Sam Rockwell’s character, Frank, explains to Walton Goggins’ character, Rick, that after he moved to Thailand, sex addiction consumed him and he began to indulge in his wildest fantasies with local women.
Frank says, in an extraordinary monologue, that he found what he was really wanted was “to be one of these Asian girls” and goes on to explain that a role-reversing, sexual encounter with a “ladyboy” sparked a new urge in him, to have sex with men that resemble himself, while cross-dressing and imagining himself as a woman.
The scene in season three, episode five of The White Lotus sees Rick sitting stunned and mute at the wild sexual revelations from his old friend, who he is meeting up with in the hope of getting his hands on a gun.
In an Instagram post on Budget Day Mr Marles — who is also the Member for Corio and nation’s Defence Minister — posted a screenshot of the monologue where Frank details his sexual desires, with the caption “The Liberals explaining how they’re opposing a tax cut for every taxpayer” and also a picture of Rick looking completely shocked, with his mouth agape.
That image was captioned “Australian voters”.
A spokeswoman for Mr Marles said the Deputy Prime Minister would not be commenting on his post.
