The victim of a tragic fatality on a family farm in Richmond has been identified as a beloved vet, adored husband and father of a one-year-old son.

Tableland Veterinary Service confirmed on Monday that former employee Dr John Hosie passed in the single-vehicle accident on his family property in Richmond on September 18.

He is survived by wife Michaela, son Hayes, father Ian, mother Sue, brother David and sister Claire.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him,” TVS said on a social-media post.

“Our love and support goes out to all his family and friends at this difficult time”.

The veterinary practice, with operations and clinics throughout northern Queensland, said Dr Hosie, known affectionately as Johnno, grew up at TVS as an offsider to father and business partner Dr Ian.

“Johnno’s love for animals and veterinary science at that young age was probably only eclipsed by his love for planes,” TVS wrote.

“It surprised no one when John enrolled into the first cohort of students studying James Cook University’s Veterinary Science Degree in 2005.”

The practice said that after Dr Hosie graduated, he moved to Gympie Veterinary Service.

“John was a natural as a veterinarian – clever, intuitive but most of all, affable and charming,” TVS said.

“He related to people from all walks of life but was always most at home with cattle and horses.”

Dr Hosie was the first JCU graduate to be recognised as a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the Reproductive Medicine chapter.

He rejoined TVS in 2012 and became a partner in the business as his father transitioned to retirement.

“To no one’s surprise, John also worked towards his pilot license and was at his happiest flying around North Queensland’s cattle stations pregnancy testing, bull testing, and soaking up station life,” TVS wrote.

“Love eventually took Johnno away from TVS in 2020, and he moved west with fiancé Dr Michaela, also a JCU graduate and TVS vet, to Yan Yean cattle station near Richmond.”

The couple married in 2021 and welcomed Hayes in 2023.

A memorial will be held in Townsville on Friday.
