US politics live: Democrats sue Donald Trump over executive order

The Democratic Party has sued the US President, accusing him of overstepping his authority by tweaking a fundamental part of the nation’s democracy.

Trump says he'd 'love' to run against Obama in 2028

Welcome to our live coverage of US politics.

Once again addressing comments he’s “not joking” about seeking a third term, Donald Trump today mused about running against his predecessor Barack Obama in the 2028 presidential election.

Asked if he were allowed to run again (which, he can’t, per the Constitution) whether that would mean the Democrats would put forward former President Obama as his opponent, Mr Trump said: “Boy, I’d love that. That would be a good one.”

It comes as stark photos have shown the shared border between California and Mexico – where historic numbers of migrants were arriving as recently as December – is now “nearly empty” under the Trump administration.

Securing America’s borders was one of President Donald Trump’s key campaign pledges in the lead-up to November’s election – one he’s made good on, passing multiple executive orders to curb illegal immigration that include suspending the US asylum systems, deploying additional troops to the border and increasing deportation efforts.

And the White House’s investigation into the so-called “Signalgate” scandal that rocked the Trump administration has concluded, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The Atlantic magazine revealed last week that its editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, was mistakenly included in a chat on the app involving high-ranking US officials – including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance – discussing the bombing of Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Speaking to reporters today, Ms Leavitt said that “this case has been closed here at the White House as far as we are concerned”.
