A truck has burst into flames after smashing into a highway guardrail on the Cassowary Coast.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene in Djarawong, 10kms north of Tully, just before 3am Wednesday.

“The semi-trailer seems to have hit a guardrail along the Bruce Highway, causing it to rollover and then catch fire,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

The male trucker driver was rushed to Innisfail Hospital with minor injuries at 3:30am.

It took three Queensland Fire Department crews more than four hours to control the blaze, with the fire finally extinguished by 7.30am.

Smoke continued to billow from the wrecked truck for hours after the fire was extinguished, with reports of smoke still streaming from the vehicle at 2pm Wednesday.

One lane of the Bruce Highway at Djarawong was closed for 10 hours following the crash, and the road was reopened at 1.52pm on Wednesday.

The cause of the crash is still unknown with the Queensland Police Service set to file an official incident report on Thursday.
