Shameless vandals smashed their way into the Charters Towers Scout Den, wrecking the kids’ safe space — but a young crew of good samaritans has swooped in to help pick up the pieces.
While the Scout Group was away on a school holiday camping trip on April 7, vandals broke into the den located on South St, Millchester by smashing a window, set off fire extinguishers, and spray-painted tables and posters — leaving behind a costly mess.
The incident is the latest in a series of vandalism attacks across Charters Towers, where businesses and community groups — including the Scout Den back in January — have been targeted this year.
As the Scouts faced a costly clean-up, Florence Bay Rover Crew, made up of 18- to 25-year-old Scouts from across Northern Queensland, provided a $700 donation to cover the cost of a new window, security improvements, and equipment replacement.
The Florence Bay Rover Crew, already praised for its community service efforts during the recent Townsville floods, presented the cheque on April 27, with Assistant Crew Leader Connor and Treasurer Chloe meeting Group Leader David and Scout Leader Chris.
“We just did what anyone would do,” the crew posted on Facebook.
Kennedy Region, part of Scouts Queensland, spans Charters Towers, Home Hill, Townsville, and previously Ingham, fostering a strong network of support between its Scout Groups.
