Townsville Police have confirmed they are investigating a shocking incident in which a stolen car full of alleged juvenile offenders chased down, rammed and flipped a ute containing four adults over the weekend.

Queensland Police Service said on Tuesday that a Toyota HiLux had been stolen from a private address in Templeton Cres, Douglas, between the hours of 11.45pm on Saturday night and 12.15am on Sunday morning before the terrifying encounter in Thuringowa Central at 3am.

A relative of one of the occupants of the vehicle told the Townsville Bulletin on Sunday that two stolen vehicles had pursued the Colorado containing three young men and a woman, which had then attempted to seek safety at Kirwan Police Station before it was rammed and rolled.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed over the weekend that all four occupants were transported to Townsville University Hospital in stable conditions and treated for minor injuries.

The QPS spokeswoman said officers from Townsville CIB’s property unit were investigating the break-in in conjunction with officers from Kirwan who were investigating the alleged “hit and run incident” on the intersection of High Range Drive and Regiment Court at 3.11am.

She said there had been no arrests of charges laid in relation to the incident.

Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto said Townsville residents were living in a “perpetual state of fear as youth criminals run rampant on the streets endangering the lives of people going about their normal business”.

“Throughout Queensland we’ve had home invasions, carjackings and murders and it is an absolute miracle that the four occupants of the vehicle that was rammed on the weekend were not more seriously injured and added to the death toll.”

The Katter’s Australian Party deputy leader said the State Labor Government had lost control of the situation.

“At what point did they think creating laws that foster this lawless behaviour by criminals was going to benefit anyone else in society?”

Police Minister Mark Ryan said even one instance of crime was “totally unacceptable as the consequences for the victim can be traumatising”.

“However, it’s important to note that the Queensland Police Service advises that as a result of their targeted, intelligence driven and saturation policing operations involving Taskforce Guardian and extreme high-visibility police patrols in Townsville, significant work continues to be done to support community safety,” he said.

“This is encouraging, but there is still more work to do, and police have made it very clear they will not relent in targeting offenders who seek to cause harm in the Townsville community.”
