The global sporting community is rallying around former Townsville Crocs superstar Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams after a shock cancer diagnosis aged just 46.
Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams, star player at the Crocs and the Melbourne Tigers, is starting treatment for stage 4 colon cancer.
“Pray for me as I go through this journey. I will beat this,” Williams told his social media followers.
Williams made his debut for Townsville Crocodiles in 2009 at 30 years old leading the team to the semi-finals in both 2009 and 2010.
He was named the NBL’s most valuable player for that season and became the face for ‘Croc Nation’.
Williams former coach, Trevor Gleeson, brought Williams to the Townsville Crocs to replace injured Rosell Ellis in 2007.
Williams shared a post on Facebook on Friday after being visited by Gleeson and Andrew Gaze.
“Literally, I can’t think of two Aussie blokes to come and visit me better than these two,” Williams captioned the image.
“Much love Andrew Gaze and the great Trevor Gleeson.”
Gleeson showed his support for Williams earlier in the week while commentating for Australia’s FIBA World cup campaign.
“Corey has been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer and he is going to start treatment real soon,” Gleeson said.
“I know people up in Townsville, the Croc Nation, Corey invented Croc Nation, get on the socials and send some love out to him.”
“We wish you well Corey and the challenge ahead.
“There is nothing but love for the fight ahead and we know that you’re a fighter mate, you’re going to beat it.”
This support was echoed by sportspeople and commentators around Australia including AFL and AFLW players, fellow commentators and NBL clubs.
“Prayers up brother, your heart of gold will pull you through this,” said Hawthorn AFLW player Akec Makur Chuot.
