A wife and husband team have tasted sweet success after their local barbecue store was named the biggest in the country for their company.

A WIFE and husband team have tasted sweet success after their local barbecue store was crowned the biggest in the country for their company.

When Anju and Raj Khanal first came to Townsville after managing their Barbeques Galore store in Cairns, they knew they could build a store to be proud of.

More than four years on, the couple behind Townsville’s Barbeques Galore store have been awarded the Best Performance Award for 2021-2022, after ordering $2 million worth of stock for the shop.

The award makes them the biggest Barbeques Galore retail store in Australia, and the top in terms of turnover for the last financial year.

Mrs Khanal said she has been thrilled to hear their names called for the award.

“For us to get that award was amazing and shocking, we didn’t think we were the biggest,” Mrs Khanal said.

“It is quite a big achievement because we started with nothing.”

After identifying a gap in the local Townsville market, the pair moved from Cairns where they had been managing their store for several years.

“We wanted to buy the Cairns store, we had built it up from the ground … but they said no …,” she said.

“They said you’re a victim of your own success, but they said ‘Townsville doesn’t have (a Barbeques Galore), so how about moving to Townsville?’”

Anju and Raj Khanal have been running the Barbeques Galore Townsville store for almost five years and have won multiple awards.

A trip up Castle Hill sold the pair on making the move and they have not looked back since.

Both hailing originally from Nepal, Mrs Khanal said she had never tried BBQ before coming to Australia.

She said the couple now lived and breathed the company, and loved to barbecue.

“Without passion, we wouldn’t be here,” she said.

“We live BBQs, we live the brand, and we back it 100 per cent – and it gives back because we back it 100 per cent.”

Said had managed to nab the award despite having a team of only seven people, and that they were on the hunt for staff to join their team.

“We were very, very pleased, and very, very humbled. It was good to know our hard work was recognised,” Mrs Khanal said.
