A new shed designed to combat loneliness, improve mental wellbeing and allow participants to get more active by building bikes has opened in Townsville.
The Bike Shed is a new model developed exclusively in North Queensland by Selectability and is based on the proven Men’s Shed concept, opening in Aitkenvale.
It has already been rolled out in Mackay, Charters Towers and now Townsville, and plans are under way for the Bike Shed to be launched in Mount Isa and Palm Island.
Selectability CEO Debra Burden said social isolation and loneliness could be harmful to both physical and mental health.
“The Townsville Bike Shed provides a friendly, open and caring environment for people to make friends, get active and engage in a range of projects,” Ms Burden said.
“I encourage the Townsville community to come along and check out the Bike Shed, borrow a bike and go for a ride, do some bike repairs in the workshop or just pop in for a coffee and a chat.
“It’s a free service and everyone is welcome.
“We are looking for people to participate in the activities or those who may want to volunteer.”
Ms Burden said the Bike Shed at Anne Street, Aitkenvale, was open for two sessions each weekday from 7am to 9am and from 3pm to 5pm.
She said the program would also help people repair their bikes and they welcomed the donation of old bikes.
“The bikes that are donated can be worked on and our goal with that is to be able to repair the bikes and donate them back into the community to those who are in need,” she said.
