Police are investigating the cause of a blaze that caused significant damage to a popular Townsville business.

Queensland Police Service confirmed that it had responded to the fire at Tropical North Day Spa on Charters Towers Road at 6.15am on Monday morning.

The highly rated spa in Mysterton has been operating for 19 years, offering a range of services and products, including massage, body treatments and makeup services.

The business, rated 4.7 out of five stars, has been contacted for comment.

A QPS spokesperson confirmed that no employees were inside the business at the time of the fire.

“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing,” the spokesperson said just before midday.

Queensland Fire Department confirmed that QPS were still guarding the scene as they awaited the arrival of a specialised investigator.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident by an alarm that activated inside the day spa.

Acting Wulguru Fire Station OIC Scott Cross said that when crews first arrived there was black smoke over the area and flames, which made conditions challenging.

“On arrival there was a large amount of black smoke coming from the building and flames from the rear of the building,” he said.

Fire crews forced their way through the front door of the spa to access the blaze.

“When further resources arrived the second team made entry through the rear of the building by forcing entry through the rear door,” OIC Cross said.

“The fire was located in the centre building. We’ve managed to stop the spread of the fire to the adjoining units.”

No one was inside the building during the fire.

OIC Cross said the heavy smoke gave fire fighters some trouble.

“Obviously it's a day spa, so there is a heavy fuel load there with mattresses, materials, stuff like that so you get that dark, active smoke,” he said.

“It is too early to determine a cause at this point in time.”

Charters Towers Rd was temporarily closed to all traffic heading into the city, when police put roadblocks around the incident.

Tropical North Day Spa is located directly across the road from the Mundingburra Police Station.
