A Townsville prison officer has been charged with supplying dangerous drugs within a correctional facility after police allegedly intercepted his vehicle on the way to work.

Police said they intercepted a vehicle, allegedly driven by a 47-year-old Kirwan man, along Dwyer Street outside the Townsville Correctional Centre in Stuart on July 29.

A search warrant was executed, and several items were seized from the vehicle.

Queensland Corrective Services has confirmed a 47-year-old male officer has been suspended pending the outcome of criminal charges.

It’s understood the man allegedly involved was on his way to work at the time of the intercept.

Police have charged him with one count each of supplying dangerous drugs within a correctional facility, computer hacking and misuse and possessing items used in the commission of a crime.

He is set to reappear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on October 18.

Corrections Minister Nikki Boyd has declined to comment on the specific details of the alleged incident.

A spokesman for the Minister stated, “The Minister is unable to comment on matters before the court.”

“The highest standards of professional and ethical behaviour are expected of Queensland Corrective Services staff to keep Queenslanders safe. There is zero tolerance for contraband in correctional centres,” the spokesman continued.

Queensland Corrective Services reported that during 2023-24, officers seized 2,446 items of drug-related contraband across the state, underscoring their ongoing efforts to prevent illegal substances from entering prisons.
