A Townsville police officer who was charged with accessing child abuse material has been named after his first appearance in court.

Nathan Allan Miguel was a Constable at the time he was charged with using a carriage service to access child abuse material in January this year.

Police reported earlier that the 27-year-old had been suspended from his duties and it was alleged he obtained the material while off duty.

On Tuesday morning he appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court for the first time where his lawyer Calvin Gnech appeared via phone and asked for a brief of evidence.

Police prosecutor Kimberly Rodgers-Ford asked for six weeks for the brief to be finalised.

Magistrate Kerri Fredericks adjourned the matter in order for the brief to be prepared, to April 9 in Townsville court.

Mr Miguel’s appearance will not be required and he will remain on bail.
