Police have embarked on a dramatic foot chase through the streets of Garbutt after a stolen ute crashed into a pole and its four occupants ran off.

Acting Senior Seargent Jonathan Searle said police observed a stolen white dual cab ute had crashed into a light pole on Lonerganne St about 11.30am on Thursday.

He said four of the vehicle’s occupants — two women and two men — ran away from the crash wreckage on foot.

Police said the white dual cab ute was stolen during a burglary at an address on Gibbard St, Condon, between 6-8pm on Tuesday, December 6.

Police were able to apprehend two women along Lonerganne St, and both were taken to Townsville University Hospital in stable condition for observation.

Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing people on their rooves as the other two men continued to flee from police.

One of the men was eventually apprehended on Gorden St, while the other man still hasn’t been tracked down.

“We believe one of the other occupants who’s still outstanding did decant through some of the unit complexes,” Sgt Searle said.

He is described as being First Nations in appearance and around 20-30 years old.

Sgt Searle said the stolen ute had been observed by police crews minutes before the crash, but there had been no attempt to intercept them.

“The information I have at this point is that the crews weren’t in a position to safety (intercept the car),” he said.

He said initial investigations suggest the car was travelling along Percy St and failed to properly negotiate a turn into Lonerganne St before crashing into a light pole.
