A man has been charged with murder after Jordan Hay was found dead in the back of a car on a remote dirt road in North Queensland.

The 21-year-old’s body was discovered in the back seat of his silver Subaru Forester on Webb Rd, Woodstock, by a passer-by at 8.45am on December 14, 2024.

Now, five weeks after Jordan’s funeral, a 26-year-old Gulliver man has been charged over his alleged murder.

Police confirmed he was charged on Tuesday, February 11, following investigations by the Townsville Criminal Investigation Branch and the Homicide Investigation Unit.

Detectives will allege the accused and Jordan were known to each other.

The 26-year-old fronted Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until his next court date on June 13.

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Caswell from the Crime Services Group said the case was tragic.

“Losing a son, brother, and a friend … no more serious offence comes before police to investigate,” he said.

“To bring someone before the court for this alleged crime is obviously a good outcome for police.”

As part of the investigation, police and SES conducted an “emu search” along Webb Rd, seizing a number of items.

However, Detective Caswell would not confirm whether or not a weapon was found.

“Obviously, a forensic process takes place, some preliminary investigations into that, suggests that he has suffered some type of violence,” he said.

“With the pathologist report not yet with us, it’s only preliminary at this stage. I won’t go into any specifics about the injuries.”

Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward, especially if they had seen two caucasian men travelling in a 2003 Subaru Forester on Webb Rd or Dingo Park Rd areas near Woodstock on the night of December 12 or the morning of December 13.

A friend of Jordan Hay previously described him as a “lovely young man” who worked as a “cellar man” at a high-profile Townsville venue.

“He had his head in the right space, and he was heading in the right direction,” the friend said.

“He was a good, honest kid; he was what you want kids to be. When he’d have his knock-off drink, he used to come over (to the Hotel Herbert) and have a yarn with us for an hour or two while he was waiting for a lift home (from family members).

“On Fridays, while waiting for his lift home, he’d come over about 3pm in the afternoon and have knock-off drinks until about 5.30pm and we would share laughs and stories and what have you.”
