UPDATE, Friday 3pm: A YOUNG man charged over a violent stabbing will remain behind bars on remand after a feud between two families turned bloody in a Townsville shopping centre.

Brandon Jordan Storm Stephen, 19, faced Townsville Magistrates Court from custody on Friday where his lawyer asked the court to release him on bail.

“Whilst he should not have had a knife on his person, he really had no other choice but to defend himself.”

The incident, which played out inside Vincent Village Shopping Centre, was captured on CCTV, the court was told.

Police opposed the bail application and described the altercation as “concerning”.

Stephen was on bail charged with two other violent offences, including serious assault of a person over 60, when he allegedly stabbed the 20-year-old man four times with a knife, police prosecution Senior Constable Erin Collis said.

She said the 19-year-old previously spent time behind bars for assaulting a police officer.

He was charged with grievous bodily harm and possessing a knife in a public place after the alleged stabbing on Thursday.

He now faces a combined 10 charges including multiple breaches of bail and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Stephan’s bail was denied and his case will return to court in September.

UPDATE, Friday 8am: POLICE have revealed more details about the lead up to a stabbing at Vincent last night, as the victim recovers from surgery in hospital.

About 5.40pm on Thursday, a 20-year-old man was stabbed four times inside Vincent Village Shopping Centre on the corner of Fulham Rd and Nathan St.

It will be alleged a minor fight led to the serious stabbing.

Police will allege the offender, 19, ran from the scene, but was swiftly arrested at a Gosper St house after police set up a cordon in the area.

Townsville Inspector Jason Brosnan said police would allege the men got into an argument at the shopping centre when things escalated.

“(Police will allege) the victim started hitting the offender … and then the offender has (allegedly) produced a knife,” Inspector Brosnan said.

The victim suffered three superficial stab wounds, and one serious stab wound to his stomach.

It’s understood the victim underwent surgery at Townsville University Hospital (TUH) last night and was recovering this morning.

A spokeswoman from TUH said the patient was in a stable condition.

Townsville Detective Inspector Jason Shepperd confirmed the men were known to each other, and it wasn’t a random attack.

Inspector Shepperd said the 19-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and possess a knife in a public place.

His bail has been opposed and he will face Townsville Magistrates Court today.
