The North Queensland Cowboys have expressed sorrow over the passing of a foundation player Robert Piva, a tough former Zealand and Western Samoan international.

The Cowboys said they were saddened by the death of “fearsome front-rower” Robert Piva, the North Queensland team’s player No. 31.

“A New Zealand International, Piva played nine games for the Cowboys during the club’s maiden season in 1995,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

“A fearsome front-rower, Piva had a prolific career in New Zealand before moving to England to play for Wakefield in 1994.”

The club extended its sympathies to Piva’s family.

A family member shared a touching tribute on Facebook saying he was a “true pillar of strength” who was known for his unwavering commitment.

“With a heart full of passion, he devoted himself to helping others, always going above and beyond to lend a hand when needed,” Fetu Piva wrote.

“A protector and a backbone to all who loved him, Rob could be counted on in the toughest of times, offering support, wisdom, and a genuine presence. His love for family was boundless, and his contagious laugh filled any room.”

She said his legacy lives on in the “countless lives he has enriched with his humour, guidance, and hard truths.”

New Zealand Rugby League described Kiwis No. 647 as a rugged and determined forward who represented New Zealand on the 1993 tour of Britain and France.

“Piva played one Test match and six non-Test fixtures before an unfortunate eye-socket fracture cut his tour short.”

NZRL said Piva was named in the Western Samoan squad for the 1995 Rugby League World Cup.

“Piva’s impact on the game extended well beyond his playing days, as he remained involved in the sport, turning out for the Porirua Pumas in the Bartercard Cup in 2001,” it said.

“New Zealand Rugby League extends its heartfelt condolences to Robert’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of playing alongside him.

“His contributions to the game will not be forgotten.”
