Townsville police have shed additional light on a shocking incident in which a man allegedly armed with a knife assaulted three police officers over the weekend.

The Mount Louisa man, 50, allegedly assaulted the officers during an arrest.

Acting Superintendent Damien Crosby, speaking at the Strand Police Beat in North Ward on Monday, confirmed that police were called to an address on Tyrrell St, Gulliver, just before 6.30pm on Saturday.

He said the initial 000 call was “in relation to a male who was (allegedly) trespassing in several yards”.

“Upon being approached by police he acted very seriously (allegedly) assaulting three officers, he was arrested and restrained and has since been charged with a total of eight offences.”

One of the officers required medical treatment, but was not admitted to hospital.

The charges include serious assault of a police officer, trespass and possession of a knife.

Acting Superintendent Crosby said the incident “reinforces the dynamic nature of policing and the challenges our officers face every day as they go about their duties”.

“Obviously there is no discretion, there is no excuse for assaulting a police officer,” he said.

“If you assault a police officer you will be arrested and where we are able to, we will oppose bail and you will stay in custody until your next court appearance.”

He was expected to appear in court on July 28.
