Michael James Sloggett, Jamie Daniel Reiffel alleged money laundering case continues

Two men who still have money laundering charges before the court have had the trial pushed back again. Here’s the latest.

The case for two cryptocurrency traders accused of money laundering is moving slowly with it being four years since the pair were initially charged.

Michael James Sloggett was charged in April 2021 with 10 money laundering offences and Jamie Daniel Reiffel was charged with four of the same offences.

Mr Sloggett who still continues to advertise cryptocurrency advice on his social media was alleged to have laundered more than $2m and used “large scale” cash deposits which were funnelled through shells accounts before being converted into cryptocurrencies.

Police alleged Mr Reiffel, the former director of Mr Sloggett’s supplement enterprise had laundered more than $800,000 in cash.

On Friday morning, commonwealth prosecutor Sam Lanskey appeared in Townsville District Court where he said a part-heard pre-trial application had been held in January this year, and “revised” evidence that related to Mr Reiffel’s charges was being sent to both their defence lawyers.

Defence lawyer Andrew Peel from Purcell Taylor Lawyers is representing Mr Sloggett and suggested his and Mr Reiffel’s charges remain together and said he would need time to receive the updated documents and consider them with his client.

Judge Gregory Lynham adjourned all charges to May 23 for mention, including Mr Sloggett’s drug supply and possession charges.
