The latest development in Burdell will bring a total of 16 paramedics and 10 ambulances to the outer Townsville suburb when it’s completed early next year.
The new ambulance station, which will be constructed on land opposite the Burdell Bunnings purchased by the state government, will be built by FK Gardener and Sons, with construction beginning soon.
Once completed, the facility at 8 Galax Entrance will also host a clinical education unit as well as a regional office for use by Queensland Ambulance Service staff.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the location was chosen in order to ensure the ambulances would be able to travel safely throughout the community.
“Burdell and surrounds has had a significant population growth which sees an
increase in demand for ambulance services in the area,” Ms D’Ath said.
“This new state-of-the-art station will help ease that pressure for the local
community.
“The station location has been identified as the easiest and safest access for
paramedics to respond to the Burdell community.”
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said that the area was one of the ‘biggest, growing parts of Townsville’.
“They’re saying 30,000 people here by 2030. That’s only seven years away, so having this in place will be substantial for increasing the amount of service.”
QAS Assistant Commissioner for the Northern Region Matt Green said construction was expected to be completed by next year.
“The high standard of care our Townsville region is used to, will continue once this new purpose-built ambulance station becomes operational in the first half of 2024.”
