Emergency crews were forced to unclog drains as water pooling on the road contributed to a massive eight-vehicle crash on the Townsville Ring Road, sending five people to hospital.
Police and paramedics responded to the crash in Douglas just after 5.30pm on Monday following reports of multiple vehicles colliding in wet conditions.
The incident followed a severe storm that lashed the region, with Cluden recording 51mm of rain and Apjohn Street in Horseshoe Bay receiving 82mm in just 24 hours.
Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed five people were taken to Townsville University Hospital in stable conditions, with injuries ranging from a suspected fractured arm and hand lacerations to whiplash and shock.
As emergency services worked to clear the scene, crews were seen clearing a blocked drain along the highway to allow water to recede.
A witness at the scene said water had been pooling on one side of the road and had reached knee height in some areas.
Police said they are investigating the cause of the crash.
