The Bruce Hwy has reopening in both directions after an uncontrolled grass fire cut off traffic in Julago, near Billabong Sanctuary.

A long line of banked up traffic is now moving after fire crews successfully extinguished a grass fire on Julago St, right beside the Bruce Hwy.

QFES said their crews extinguished the blaze at around 3.40pm and are now cleaning up the site.

The Bruce Hwy is open in both directions.

PREVIOUSLY:

The Bruce Hwy has been completely cut off due to a grass fire in Julago, south of Townsville.

QFES said their fire crews were called to the scene around 2pm, and by 3pm they had six different crew battling the blaze.

North and southbound traffic was blocked once fire crews started to fear the blaze could jump the highway.

The fire is currently located on Julago Street, very close to the site of a past vegetation fire from two weeks ago.

Fire crews are currently performing backburning in an attempt to contain the fire.
