Burdekin Shire Council have hired their newest chief executive officer (CEO) after a nationwide search to find a candidate willing to embrace council’s plans for an “exciting future”.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said she is pleased to announce Matthew Magin as the new chief executive officer, and welcomed him back to the Burdekin.

“Matthew will officially commence his work in this critical role commencing on 16 September 2024,” Ms Dalle Cort said.

“Some of our community may recognise Matthew’s name as he was a successful former Burdekin CEO between 2014 and 2016.”

In 2016 Mr Magin left council in what was described by a Townsville Bulletin reporter at the time as a “shock resignation” for the newly elected council, led by mayor Lyn McLaughlin, who’d just won back the position after four years on the outside.

Since 2016, Mr Magin has been working in the Balonne Shire as council CEO.

The recruitment process for CEO involved Mr Magin having to impress the mayor, councillors and an “independent community member”.

Ms Dalle Cort said Mr Magin impressed with his “mature approach along with his obvious energy, knowledge and drive.”

Mr Magin said he loved being a part of the Burdekin community in the past and his family were looking forward to moving back.

“On the local front, I want to hear where our community thinks that our Council can improve, and they can be assured I will identify the priorities and act upon findings to build a better Council,” Mr Magin said.

“What a wonderful opportunity the Council has given me to be a part of the exciting future I see ahead for our region.”

Hiring a new CEO is the single most expensive hiring decision a council can make, with outgoing CEO Terry Brennan sitting on a plush salary in the range of $250,000 to $350,000 – a pretty normal price tag for a council chief executive.

Local Government CEOs are responsible for advising councillors, carrying out their decisions and essentially managing all money and legalities.
