What happens when you are charged with a crime?

A Townsville mother who attacked security guards and needed to be thrown out of The Ville Resort-Casino twice, has paid the price for not taking the hint.

A court has heard how on July 7, Deanna Patricia Smith, 24, had been visiting the casino when she became involved in an argument on the casino floor.

Police prosecutor Nikki Hui said CCTV captured Smith being escorted out of the premises when she became involved in another verbal argument with someone else and “had to be stopped by security before a fight started”.

After leaving in a car, Smith returned to the casino some time later.

“She began a physical fight with security staff and the person from the original argument,” Ms Hui said.

“Security had to intervene to stop the fighting and they were verbally abused by the defendant, (before) she departed in the vehicle.

“An ambulance had to attend to treat two security staff. It was completely unacceptable behaviour, security staff were trying to do their job.”

Appearing in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Smith pleaded guilty to one count of committing a public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises.

Ms Hui believed a fine would be acceptable in this instance.

Duty Lawyer Kerri Patterson said her client, who was the mother to two children, had worked in bars since the age of 13.

Taking into account the early guilty plea, her client’s youth and lack of criminal history, she called for a fine to be handed down.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan said it was lucky Smith had been charged with a less severe summary charge.

After Ms Keegan advised Smith not to drink so much, Smith replied she was sober at the time, to which the magistrate responded, “that probably doesn’t make it any better”.

She fined Smith $1000, with no conviction recorded.
