An excavator operator had six to eight shots of home brewed tequila before he crashed his e-scooter and assaulted a paramedic during a drunken outburst.

David Stuart Pilbeam appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday after he hit a paramedic in the arm and hurled abuse at her including calling her a ‘sl-t’.

Police prosecutor John Moran said in October last year two female paramedics were trying to find out if Pilbeam had any injuries after he crashed his e-scooter.

“While putting him on the stretcher for transport, Pilbeam lashed out at the ambulance officer, hitting her in the upper arm,” Mr Moran said.

“That forced the paramedics to retreat from (Pilbeam) … until the police were able to be on scene.”

During his angry outburst the 54-year-old called the paramedics “slut, dumb dog c – ts”, Mr Moran said.

They were eventually able to transport the backhoe driver to the hospital where he admitted to drinking six to eight beers, six to eight shots of home brewed tequila and smoking marijuana that night.

“The hospital declined treatment of (Pilbeam) due to his ongoing aggression, and he left the hospital of his own accord” Mr Moran said.

Defence lawyer, Tracy Brown from Resolute Legal, said the Burdekin pipeline worker had been “drowning his sorrows” as he dealt with financial and housing issues, and couldn’t recall most of the night.

After looking at the man’s criminal history – which had no recent similar offences – Magistrate Kerri Fredericks said it was out of character for the man to act so aggressively.

Pilbeam pleaded guilty to serious assault of a public officer while intoxicated.

He was sentenced to 40 hours of community service to be completed within six months and fined $1,200.
