A GoFundMe has been launched for the Crystal Creek Community Hall in an effort to buy a long-needed generator as volunteers work around the clock sourcing food and medications.
Volunteer Elly Fraser launched the GoFundMe on Thursday, February 6, and has already received over $2000 in donations - mostly from other locals.
“It’s a little community hall that is run by volunteers, and right now the toilets need power to work,” Ms Fraser said.
“This hall constantly gets looked over because it’s right between Ingham and Townsville and neither council wants to take responsibility for it.”
Ms Fraser has set the GoFundMe target to $8000, and is hopeful they can quickly reach the goal and purchase a high capacity generator for the not-profit hall ASAP.
Rising Sun Townsville has offered to sell the hall a generator at a base price, and has even contributed its own donation to the GoFundMe.
The Crystal Creek area has been without power since 2am Sunday, while also being cut off from Townsville by the Ollera Ck bridge collapse (only emergency-use vehicles are allowed across the temporary army bridge).
Even worse off is nearby Paluma, whose residents remain completely cut off by multiple landslides.
“The hall is getting some food deliveries and essential medications, which we are giving out to people,” Ms Fraser said.
“It’s frustrating because we’ve been trying for a long time to get government funding for a generator.”
