The legal team behind a woman who allegedly murdered a 9-year-old boy is still waiting for a brief of evidence from police.

Schynada Karkadoo, 24, is alleged to have killed Thai-li Ned on Australia Day, with police revealing at the time that he had a “significant head injury” that was “quite obvious”.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Miles from the Child Protection Unit said when officers arrived at the scene, officers saw that the boy had “apparent head injuries”.

Karkadoo’s case was heard in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday, with her lawyer Mikaila Ward, from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, saying she was still waiting for a brief of evidence.

Prosecutor Emily Olditch said there was no update on the brief.

“I did send a task to the officer yesterday to provide a late brief notification that has not been completed,” she said.

Ms Olditch asked for an extension of four weeks so the brief could be finalised.

Magistrate Richard Lehmann said the case would be moved to the domestic violence criminal call-over. When Karkadoo was charged, police said she had a “loose family connection” to Thai-li.

The case will be mentioned again on May 23, with Karkadoo’s appearance not required. No pleas have been entered.

Karkadoo is on remand in the Brisbane Womens’ Correctional Centre.

After Thai-li’s death, there were concerns for the welfare of his mother, Tiarne Ned, who was on remand at the Townsville Womens’ Correctional Centre at the time.
