Cool and cloudy weather, followed by a dash of weekend rain, are on their way to challenge the Townsville region’s tradition of fine and dry conditions during the winter months.

Senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, Helen Reid expected Thursday’s warm, sunny conditions to give way to dry, cloudy weather on the Friday, bringing down the temperature a couple of degrees towards the region’s winter averages.

“We’ve got a ridge of high pressure keeping everything steady as she goes but what’s happening in the upper atmosphere over the next few days is going to draw down a little bit of tropical moisture over northern Queensland,” Ms Reid said.

“That started happening at the moment with that little bit of cloud, but with a system going through the southern parts of the countryside over the next day or two, that’ll link in over northern Queensland in the upper atmosphere over the course of the weekend to thicken that cloud and potentially bring us a little bit of rain.

“We’re not expecting to squeeze a shower out of that until the weekend and Sunday looks like you might actually have something worth measuring in your gauge, and then everything should be clearing out again by Monday and back to regular sunshine on Tuesday.”

Townsville has a 10 per cent chance of rain on Friday, a 40 per cent of 0-1mm on Saturday, a 60 per cent chance of 0-4mm on Sunday, and a 40 per chance of 0-1mm on Monday.

“(Temperature-wise) we’re looking at it continuing around the 25-26C mark, all the way through the weekend, possibly a bit a bit cooler than average through inland parts,” she said.

“There might be a little bit more rainfall a bit further west, depending how it all lines up, it might be a bit cooler through there by a couple of degrees, but it’s just a bit of cloud cover taking the edge off what would otherwise be somewhat warmer days.”
