A 12-year-old boy was left terrified and bloodied after a man on a motorbike brutally attacked him on the street during a robbery in Hyde Park.
The incident unfolded about 6.15pm on Sunday, February 9 at the intersection of Bayswater Road and Kings Road after a motorbike rider wearing a helmet confronted the boy, accusing him of stealing the e-scooter he was on.
His mum, whose name has been withheld to protect his identity, said he had been on his way to help his aunt feed her guinea pigs when the rider suddenly flagged him down.
She said when he got close, the attacker barked, “You and your mate stole my son’s scooter,” before landing a savage punch to the boy’s face, splitting his lip wide open.
The mysterious motorbike rider — who appeared to be in his 30s or 40s — then took off with the e-scooter.
The young victim was left in shock, needing four stitches to close the wound.
His distraught mum rushed to the scene after getting a call from him, taking him to the police station before heading to Townsville University Hospital.
“My son works so hard delivering pamphlets to earn money to buy that scooter,” she said.
“His dad helped him with the rest so he could buy it for his 13th birthday next week.”
Now, the stolen scooter is still missing, and her son is too scared to go out on his own.
“He’s very scared after the night that he got attacked,” she said.
“He came back to my place after everything and he was too frightened to go out again in case that man came back.
“What makes it worse is that he thought he was doing a good deed when that motorcyclist pulled up and called him over.
“He thought he might need some help and then this is what’s happened.”
Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward as they search of the attacker.
The investigation is ongoing and no one has been arrested at this stage. Anyone with information is urged to contact police via Police Link on 131 444.
