A history of coffee in Melbourne

FROM a small coffee stall at a night market, to a fiercely-loved and successful brand, Annee Nguyen says her dreams have come true.

The owner of Annee’s Caphe Sua Da was elated at the opening of her newest Vietnamese coffee store at Flinders Lane on Wednesday, which saw customers start lining up around the block more than an hour before the doors opened.

“It’s all a blur at the moment, it’s like a dream, I am so flattered to see how much support we have,” Ms Nguyen said.

The trademark iced coffee started in Cairns in 2014, and has since grown to four bustling stores across North Queensland.

The new shop in the CBD is the first tenant in developer Martin Locke’s Flinders Lane, opposite City Lane.

Mr Locke said they had big plans to make the retail area a long-term success.

“When you plan with the right reasons, and the right ‘why’, it won’t fail,” he said.

“We know what we want to happen, it’s a vision, it’s too special to make into a fast food outlet place.”

Mr Locke said he was more than happy to wait for the right tenants and build around Annee’s.

The following of Annee’s brand was evident in the 100m line of customers who waited happily and patiently to get their caffeine hit on Wednesday morning.

Ms Nguyen was anything but nervous about the new venture, saying it was their personable attitude and care for their customers which kept people coming back again and again.

“But I can’t do it without my team … I’m incredibly lucky to have everyone be a part of this,” she said.

Owner Annee Nguyen said she was stoked to bring the popular brand into the CBD.

“I’m over the moon that we are finally opening our second Townsville location, as our customers have been asking for this for a long time,” she said.

“We are thrilled to be able to expand our customer base in Townsville, welcoming current and new customers to experience Annee’s Caphe Sua Da in a premium new location and making ourselves more accessible to professionals and residents of the Townsville CBD area.”

Annee’s Caphê Sua Da, which was established in Cairns in 2014, is Australia’s original Vietnamese iced coffee bar.

Annee’s offers a unique iced coffee experience, merging traditional Vietnamese phin filter brewing methods with a reputable, yet exclusive cold brewing process.

Fiercely loyal Annee’s lovers have been begging for another shop since their first Townsville location opened in Otto’s Market back in 2019.

Customers often brave huge lines which stretch up the hall of the Warrina arcade just to get their lips on a coffee.

The new location is set to ease the long lines at the original spot, and give thirsty office dwellers a chance to grab their Annee’s while at work.

The new Flinders Lane location will open at 8am on Wednesday, October 13.

The first 100 customers will be gifted a share in $3000 worth of goodies.
