Amie Taylor has come out on top as Townsville’s best pilates instructor of 2025. Known for her beach pilates sessions on The Strand, the 24-year-old says the niche exercise is experiencing a ‘boom’ in NQ.
More than 400 Townsville Bulletin readers voted in the best pilates instructor poll.
Ms Taylor came first with 26 per cent of the vote.
Second place was NQ Power Yoga and Pilates instructor Dee, with 18 per cent of the vote.
Ms Taylor said it was a nice surprise to be voted Townsville’s best pilates instructor.
“It’s good recognition, especially as the industry is getting bigger and bigger,” Ms Taylor said.
“The last two years pilates have definitely taken off in Townsville. It’s a gentle exercise but it’s not low impact. People can get a good workout.”
Ms Taylor teaches pilates at multiple locations - she has her own business ‘PWA’ (Pilates With Amie) which runs $12 group beach sessions on The Strand and one-on-one matwork and reformer sessions at her home.
Outside PWA, Ms Taylor hosts classes three times a week at the Gypsea Collective, and teaches four times a week at KX.
“People say they enjoy the energy of my classes,” Ms Taylor said.
“I like to make it achievable for everyone, it’s not too hard for those starting out, but it’s hard enough for those who really love it.”
Ms Taylor said pilates has gone from an exercise old people do, to a trend.
Pilates was developed by circus acrobat, nurse, and self-defence instructor Joseph Pilates in the 1920s who was influenced by the worlds of body building and injury recovery methods among New York City dancers.
