The ending to Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob’s unit in Vietnam was given an experimental drug designed to increase aggression — it triggered homicidal attacks, and he was attacked and fatally wounded by a fellow soldier. Much of the film, set in New York, is Jacob in a sort of quasi-hell/Purgatory state trying to come to terms with his death. The movie ends with Jacob dying in Vietnam, still in a medic tent, meaning he never went home to New York.
