The ending to the movie Chinatown

Jack Nicholson’s private eye, Jakes Gittes, falls for Evelyn, the woman he eventually comes to work for. Evelyn hires him to find the murderer of her husband and in the process he uncovers a plan by her father to take land from farmers, and redirect city water to that land to push up prices for subdivisions. But that’s not the twist — it’s that Evelyn, played by Faye Dunaway, has a daughter — who is also her sister. Trying to get Evelyn away from her father’s clutches, Jake sends her into Chinatown — where she’s tragically, mistakenly shot by police as she flees. No, it’s not the most uplifting ending, but, that’s Chinatown.
