The ending of The Machinist

Christian Bale’s character, Trevor, is stalked by a stranger named Ivan throughout the movie — he is not real, but created by his guilt. A woman named Marie and her son named Nicholas, whom Trevor has befriended, may also be figments of his imagination. The movie ends with the revelation that Trevor killed a boy — likely Nicholas — in a hit-and-run a year before, leading to his guilt, which caused his extreme insomnia and weight-loss.
